The rise of fraudulent and misleading advertising led to the formation of the Better Business Bureaus in the early 1900s. Since then, the mission of the BBB is to foster business self-regulation and help maintain public confidence in business by promoting honesty, integrity and ethics.
To this end, the BBB has developed a Code of Advertising and administers an Ad Review program. This program identifies cases of misleading, deceptive or untruthful advertising and requests that an advertiser substantiate their claim.
The outcome of each review is reported so that the public is informed on this aspect of the marketplace.
